A very enjoyable ride for 8 of us from Cheddar, destination Glastonbury, for the first time in weeks, now the waters have receded, returning via Ham Wall and Shapwick Heath nature reserves. A big thank you to Anne and John for organising and hospitality and to all who provide cakes and other delectables (some of which may have been delivered by helicopter?).
Sunday 9 July 2023: The famous five had a grand day out on a meandering route around the leafy lanes to Wookey. Coming back we were sad to find we were a week too early for the Godney Gathering so took a selfie of the site with a jaunty striped tent in the background. Weather was much better than expected . Small light shower as we left Cheddar and then fab sunshine for the rest of the day.
Friday 7 July 2023: The three amigos (Teresa, Mike and Adam met at at Avalon Marshes Centre for the 'Avalon Anti-clock to Aller' with a cafe stop at Bere Aller.

Friday 23 June 2023: Winscombe to Portishead.
Four of us set off from Winscombe with John D making it five by joining us on the Strawberry Line. It was perfect weather for cycling. John D led the way from Yatton station to Kingston Seymour - great off road route. Mike led the way up all of the hills. Chris and Gerry navigated the wilds of Portishead and its nature reserve, while John P brought us the quiet route into Claverham. It was truly a team effort. Even Anne, whose bike was sulking while she was on the injury couch, managed to make scones one handed. Tea and scones on the way home. Very welcome. Thank you everyone. A great day’s ride. Chris. |
Friday 9 June 2023: Six of us went to the Walled Garden at Mells following route 19M. Garden looking glorious. Best way to visit on a bike as can't be tempted to buy stuff.
Lovely ride along Colliers Way and countryside around Mells looking stunning. 1 puncture, courtesy of Mike. It was after our climb to Leigh on Mendip so It actually provided a welcome rest. Some very minor roads, thanks Teresa!, Lovely and rural but with prize winning potholes. |
Sunday 4 June 2023: Five of us convened at Cheddar, for a trip up the Gorge. I was somewhat disconcerted when Teresa seemed surprised (but delighted) to see me - Have you seen the route? - but was relieved to see that Dave wasn’t going to be relying on extra electric power either.
With plenty of shade and not too much traffic, we all made it and were rewarded with ‘gorgeous’ views and scenery as we cycled past Velvet Bottom, through Charterhouse and down towards Ubley. WWSS (ask Dave!), fields of buttercups, blossom in the hedgerows and verges full of wild flowers. First stop, ostensibly to drop off a forgotten jacket, Barbara’s beautiful garden in Ubley, where we were treated to delicious sponge cake with cream and strawberries. |
Following an unexpected puncture repair, Barbara joined us as we toured Chew Valley Lake, enjoying the views and the new off-road recreational path, before heading uphill to Nempnett Thrubwell. Lovely little undulating roads with views back across Blagdon Lake showed us how far we had come! Back down through Butcombe, losing Barbara (deliberately) en route, past Aldwick Court (where there seemed to be a wine tour in progress - tempting!) and on to Wrington for a short break to eat snacks/indulge in an ice-cream. Then back through Langford and Sandford. Teresa was having so much fun that she returned home via a detour through Barton, the rest of us took our respective shortest routes home/back to Cheddar. A great ride on a fabulous day.
Friday 2 June 2023: Stourhead & Longleat Awayday. We met at Stourhead NT car park and rode through the estate, past Stourhead House, and a gentle cruise down Gare Hill, along Forest Road (with shade, logs and view to Horningsham) and entered Longleat Estate. There a spectacular 1km ride down the South Drive to the front of Longleat House with fountains and huge lion sculpture, followed by a scenic ascent out of the estate with wild animals in the distant safari park area and a great view back over the house and estate. On towards Shearwater Lake, for lunch then on lanes through Maiden Bradley and Kilmington back to the start.
Local Ride Option: Sun, Sea, Sand and ... SSSSCycling! Route 18M clockwise with a stop at Cafe 33, Brean. Back via Uphill and Weston. Probably miss out Sand Point, unless we feel like an ice cream stop by the beach.

Friday 7 April 2023: A glorious day made for a good Good Friday ride. After picking our way through the bank holiday crowds enjoying the sun in Ashton Court park, some new lanes for a few people took us past Abbots Pool up through Failand.
Memorable moments: Mike - "did anyone notice me wearing a helmet when we set off?" Nobody could remember, but he found it still on the wall at the Hangstones start 30 miles later. Dave - "2 doughnuts" at the new (to us) Bike Shed cafe, where the cups are inscribed 'you are one ride away from a good mood', found room for something else at the second cafe stop at Dot's (because she was open and it would have been rude not to drop in). First ice creams of the season for some. We felt sorry for the people in stationary traffic on the M5 southbound as we cruised along the Gordano valley back lane towards Clevedon. It was a fabulous day out, 30 miles circular route from Yatton and 50-odd for those who started from Winscombe or thereabouts. |

Sunday 12 March 2023:
Four of us started out from Wedmore, (Dave was late and missed us and Jackie had an early puncture so didn't make the start) in the sun for a ride over to Chilton Polden.
J from the café has a sideline selling old treasures in a barn by the café. The men were impressed by the tools circa 1950 that were for sale. Andrew bought a huge chisel, Allan a spanner and Bill a boxed set of tools - all going cheap. I bought a pair of gardening gloves. Dave, you would have loved it! Steve turned up just as we were leaving but we met him later at Sweets.
Four of us came to the rescue of a 4X4 stuck in the mud near Ashcott. With much pushing we managed to get it out and on its way. Our good deed for the day was done. The weather clouded over a bit at times, but the sun came out again on the way back.
Hope you managed to mend your puncture Jackie!

Some short & cheeky climbs and some gravel track. Some roads less travelled and some never before - Everyone went down at least one lane they had never ridden before. Including the leader... A moderately surprising view of the Tor, which looks far better in the Summer. A bitterly cold day redeemed by the two café stops. |

Ground for a ride to Lynda's Loaf, up through Shipham and Charterhouse and down to Chewton Mendip through East Harptree, then back through Priddy and down Cheddar gorge (33 miles). Steve travelled by car (can you believe that!) whilst Dave suffered a gear cable failure and limped home with 3 gears. Good job we got well fed at Linda's.
Sunday 5th February 2023: We met at Mark for a figure of 8 ride to Huntspill and Pawlett, with coffee at Chilton Polden and return via Vole Road - 28mi.
Friday 3rd February 2023: We followed route 30M on a trip to the seaside. Coffee and cakes were had at Brean Down National Trust café.
Sunday 29th January 2023: In rather gloomy weather we rode route 15M to Mark, Burnham and Brent. Distance 30mi.
Friday 27th January 2023: We rode to Ashcott & over the hill to Bawdrip. Old roads, but a new combination; and up the old railway for a coffee at J's and return via Chilton Polden and Jack’s Drove - 30miles & 1000ft of ascent (i.e. neither flat nor hilly). The route is in the library as 29M.

Sunday 15th January 2023: Despite some short but heavy hailstorms around breakfast time, four of us met at Winscombe for Yan's ride based on 16M which took us anticlockwise through Rooksbridge and Mark to Sweets again (and more of Victoria's oat and date slice). Although staying dry it started grey and chilly but the sun came through and the extensive floodwater reflecting blue skies across Tadham Moor looked beautiful. A partial tailwind made it much easier on the return along Totney Drove than it had been 2 days ago and we had even warmed up by the time we reached Axbridge to pose with a host of golden daffodils at the end of the Strawberry Line.

Friday 13th January 2023: A repeat attempt at Allan's Meander was more successful despite some unexpected rain near the start. Bill had some bad luck (it was Friday 13th) with a chain issue but was fortunately not too far from Bike Chain in Cheddar where he left the bike and went home. The remaining 8 enjoyed completing the official Meander, stopping at Sweets on the way, although Allan resigned from leadership as he couldn't see the route on his screen in the rain, nor when the sun came through and it turned into a lovely, albeit very windy, day. Allan has since ordered a Wahoo with its very clear screen in all conditions so he will be unstoppable in future!
|
Sunday 8th January 2023: Allan's Meander was blighted by poor weather. 5 starters but a saturation soon after leaving Cheddar reduced numbers to two, who adapted the route to reach the haven of Wookey Hub and then back home by a truncated version of the intended route.
Friday 6th January 2023: Anne led the ride to revisit Middlewick Farm cafe on a day when a record 17 members set out in three groups. Everyone survived the extensive flooding of the road south from Godney crossroad. Thank goodness for the line of willows which indicated the underwater boundary between road and rhyne. We came tantalisingly close to the cafe but headed off the long way round along (surprisingly dry) Long Drove and via West Pennard and the scenic caravan-strewn lane crossing Kenn Moor. Gosh, was I ready for cake after missing breakfast! The cafe coped efficiently with our great number. Homewards, back safely through that flood again, but apparently there were two or three unrelated bike issues among the later departures from the cafe.

Monday 2nd January 2023: The forecast of a dry sunny day led to the suggestion of a Monday Bank Holiday additional ride. 6 arrived at KOW for a Steve route to Wookey Hub . Having agreed to no " cheeky bumps" we encountered other challenges - recent heavy rain led to a totally impassable ford due to not only the depth & speed of the water but also collapsed banks where we would normally wheel the bikes. Some re-routing along a lane that no one had previously ventured led us to the 2nd ford , just about wheelable taking care on the slippery side to arrive at Wookey . Yan was the 1st to leave up Mudgley Hill whilst the rest of us continued to Chapel Allerton where Sally left then it was 4 ( Steve , Allan, Bill & Anne) past the windmill for the return to Cheddar . A very enjoyable 34mi in the winter sun . All agreed that the possibility for additional rides when the forecast is good ( especially in the winter) is to be encouraged .
Sunday 1st January 2023: 17 riders started off the New Year well fuelled by mulled wine and mince pies (a record number, I think- what will it be next year?).
We set off in 3 groups for a 28mi circuit with a stop at Uphill Marina cafe. Really lucky with the weather as it had been an iffy forecast. Cafe needs a gold star for quick service of our various orders. Good Trip Adviser report to do. Great start to the year and look forward to the next 100 or so rides this year.

Past Rides 2022
Friday 30 December 2022: Fearless or foolhardy? There was a faithful foursome for the Friday ride looping from Winscombe to Nailsea despite early morning rain. We agreed a later 11am start by which time the rain had stopped and then the sun came out. A bit of drizzle coincided with our coffee stop but the sun shone again for our return home through Wrington. Our optimism for a good ride was well justified. The webmaster and his secretary enjoyed mulled wine as a reward for getting out and we look forward to more at the start of Barbara B's New Year's Day ride on Sunday.
Friday 23 December 2022: We met at Mark Car Park for a ride to Avalon Marshes Centre via Glastonbury with coffee and cake or bacon rolls at the relocated cafe. A return along the Poldens through Cossington was on the cards but with showery weather en route we decided a good job had been done and headed for home.

Friday 16 December 2022: It was -4°C when 5 hardcore division CVLC riders met at Winscombe. Mike was still in shorts (albeit 2 pairs) but modified his intended route to stay off icy roads. After a thawing coffee stop at the Strawberry Line cafe it had warmed up to zero degrees so we continued on roads chosen for their sunniness through Claverham and Wrington. It was a relatively short ride but at about 26 miles for most of us, longer and much more pleasant than we expected when we set out.
|
Friday 9 December 2022: Many thanks to the intrepid six riders who turned out for the ride to J's Bistro (Chilton Polden) It was only a short ride (24mi) but lovely sunshine. Some of us got too hot! The cafe was cosy and toasty with the sun shining through the window. Andrew's bacon roll smelt great but the rest of us stuck to cake!
Sunday 4 December 2022: We met at Kings Fitness, Cheddar for a ride to Wookey Hub (by a winding and interesting route, suitable for all).
Friday 25 November 2022: We actually made it to Rowan Tree Tearoom at the Old Town Quarry today !!. 16 of us out today. Starting at Winscombe then Maxmills Lane to Christon, Loxton, Bleadon, Uphill, along the front then back via Kewstoke. 28 miles. Café got the seal of approval for good food and welcome: I think we will be back.
Brilliant clear views riding back along South Road and the Toll Road. This makes the hills up from the town to South Road worth the slog. After a varied forecast for today, ranging from yet more rain to mainly sunny, we were expecting a soaking at some point. But... only a few spots on the way and warm sunshine at café, which is not bad for late November.

Sunday 20 November 2022: Route: Sand - Snake Lane - Theale - Bleadney - Fenny Castle - Polsham - Godney - Westhay Moor - Sweets coffee stop - Tadham Moor - Westham - Blackford - Stoughton - Wedmore. A short ride of about 22 miles.
Friday 18 November 2022: A bright sunny November day saw 13 riders out, 7 starting from Winscombe & another 6 joining at Yatton station en route to Portishead. Katherine & Bill had started their day on the train - just a shame we couldn't get enough bikes on a train for an away day! Dave arrived not on one of his 15 bikes he has in his shed but on a newly acquired very smart red & black E bike. It wasn't long before he put it to good use whirring past me up Sandford Hill in matching attire. Said bike was then admired by everyone at Yatton & 2 groups formed. Thanks to John P & Teresa for leading the 2nd group.
Portishead marina for coffee with 2 taking the opportunity to be in the warm at Waitrose. Certainly plenty of money tied up in the many fancy boats moored there. Then up onto the undulating coastal path and back to Yatton with both groups meeting up again still in the sunshine. Chris & Gerry were able to ride from their new to old house & Andrew had his first taste of Portishead. The star of the day was definitely Dave's bike last seen being tried out by other members. |
Sunday 13 November 2022 Remembrance Sunday ride: Who said November is dreary? On a mild day with cloudless skies and golden sunshine we gathered in force at KOW Cheddar. It was too good a day to stay indoors and even John G’s wife Carol, was tempted by the fine day on to her bicycle. Some of us were introduced to her for the first time (hello Carol, very pleased to meet you at last). They stayed with us as far as Panborough before returning home across the Levels. Steve was the next to part company, lured by breakfast at Wookey Hub. We passed him later making short work of a bacon sarnie. Jackie and Trevor stuck with us to Wells before returning home, spotting friends and wildlife en route across the Levels.
A fearless five continued on the long ascent via the Horringtons to the Mendip plateau. Anne said “I enjoyed that” – there are witnesses, so we’ll accept no more complaints about gradients from that quarter in future! We deserved our stop at the Rocky Mountain café, where we lunched on bacon butty, cake or cream tea according to preference. Someone also sneaked in a box of appetising-looking couscous salad. The return to Cheddar across Mendip was glorious with far-reaching views and the beech trees glowing like fire in the sunlight. We stopped to look at the statue of Romulus and Remus suckling the she-wolf on the side of the main road near the Pen Hill mast above Wells. It was created at the end of WW2 by an Italian artist, Gaetano Celestra, and his fellow POWs, as a thank you to the kindness of local people who, after their release from a local POW camp, had housed them and integrated them into their farming families. It was apposite to read of this, and later to pass by the sheep hurdles in Priddy which were decorated in the Union Jack and Lest We Forget banner, on this Remembrance Sunday. |
Friday 11 November 2022: Start 10:30 at Cheddar Leisure Centre. Mainly ride 21M on the Medium Routes page but not going to Double Gates instead to Brownes Garden Centre at Coxley. 13 turned out for this ride - unlucky for some came true as we had 3 bike issues (not Dave this time!) on the journey. Weather came over a bit dull at the cafe but the sun came out on the journey back which cheered us up no end! Circa 36 miles.
Friday 4 November 2022: A record group of 16 met at Winscombe taking advantage of a scrumptious November day as a break from the recent wet and windy weather. We split into 2 groups led separately by Bill and Katherine, their first as ride leaders. After debate we settled on Uphill as the café stop and the 2 groups set off separately for Sandford, Puxton and Hewish, across the A370 and on to Wick St Lawrence following Route 10M but with some variations. Bill's group took the turning for Sand Bay while Katherine's group continued through Kewstoke. The 2 groups met at the top of the climb out of Sand Bay with a group photo shoot looking down on Birnbeck Pier.
On then to Uphill to the café at the harbour where they dealt admirably with our large party. Suitably refreshed the 2 groups followed the cycle route to Brean with its numerous gates, then headed for Burnham. We branched off for Brent Knoll, East Brent and on to Loxton where a few departed, heading for home, while the remainder continued to Winscombe.
Bill arrived with only 3 of his 8 left and Katherine's group had been delayed with a puncture. They waited while Dave mended the tube, apparently not having a spare. Eventually all arrived safely but cold from hanging around- bring some spate tubes next time please Dave!

Sunday 30 October 2022: Considering the very dodgy weather report we had an excellent turnout of 8 for JP's ride from Mark (Ride 24M ), including a welcome appearance by John G. who accompanied us to Westhay before peeling back for home.
As we approached Avalon Marshes centre the first heavy drops of rain prompted an early coffee stop, just long enough to see the shower pass over. Dave ate his first piece of cake. Heading off over the Poldens ridge to the dark side of Somerset we avoided getting wet despite some ominously black clouds. It became progressively finer so that by the time we reached J's Bistro after 21 miles for the official cafe stop, we were basking in warm sunshine and stripping off layers. Dave ate his second piece of cake. Yan concealed his additional purchase to prevent Dave eating his third piece of cake. It was by now such a lovely afternoon that the majority continued westwards to the barrage balloon hangar at Stretcholt before returning with a tailwind to base. On the day the clocks went back we had enjoyed a smashing 37 miles round trip from Mark and a few extra for those who cycled from home. |
Friday 28 October 2022: On a very mild and balmy day for October Teresa planned a route using some new lanes & some familiar ones but in the opposite direction to usual. 7 of us set out from Wedmore heading for Burnham via Westham & Highbridge. On the way Steve caught up with us to make it 8.
On the outskirts of Highbridge Mike had gone ahead and missed the planned turn off along a previously unused lane around the outer perimeter of the industrial estate but carried on unaware we had turned off. Teresa made several attempts to contact Mike by phone! At the A38 Yan decided to turn back with sore knees, so now we were down to 6. Following an unfamiliar route into Burnham we had a brief toilet stop & more attempts to contact Mike via text. The ride continued through Lympsham and on to Edingworth for a very welcome stop at the Brent House Farm café, a new venue for many of us. From here we continued to Rooksbridge and on to Mark where we passed Steve who had gone on ahead to bag another cake stop! The final leg took us through Stoughton and on to Wedmore. A very enjoyable flat 31 miles and a great route, thanks Teresa. |
Sunday 23 October 2022: We met at Winscombe Rec at 10.30 for to ride route 4S on the Short Routes page with coffee at Middlecombe Nursery (instead of Heather's). 23 miles.
Sunday 16 October 2022: It was sunny, 17°C, with no wind - perfect conditions for a ride for 7 of us starting from Winscombe up Brockley Coombe and then through lanes down to Chew Stoke and on to Chew Valley lake, where we hit the cafe at just the right time for rapid service at an outside table with a view of the lake at its best.
Sadly Barbara W had encountered crowds when she was there with Lobo a little while earlier but we caught up with her to say hello as we passed through Ubley later. We continued down to Blagdon lake and past Aldwick vineyard before waving goodbye first to Anne and then Bill before hitting the Strawberry Line home. Thanks to Allan for initiating this ride on a lovely autumn day. |
Friday 14 October 2022: Webbington - Loxton - Lympsham- road along railway line - Bleadon - Loxton for coffee stop at new Café - Christon -Max Mill Lane - back to Winscombe. The eager eight riders braved a few drops of rain (which had stopped by the time we met at Winscombe) to enjoy a ride in improving weather. Thanks to those who turned out despite an unpromising start. Lovely coffee at the cafe but a few improvements could be made. Thanks for the feedback which I can relay back to my friends who are on the cafe committee. 20 miles Winscombe and back. Leader Yan.
Friday 7 October 2022: After the rides the previous week had been cancelled due to inclement weather I thought a good blow up onto the Mendips via Burrington Combe might be in order. 8 met at Winscombe to be joined by Barbara W after the first cattle grid for the ascent up the Combe with a good stop at the top to recover & spot Barbara B go by . The reward for the ascent (only 1/3 rd of the total ascent for the day) was a good distance along the top before the descent down to Lynda's Loaf where we were delighted to see Barbara & Colin already tucking into goodies. The forecast was heavy rain in the afternoon but bright sunshine saw us continue (minus Barbara W who went her own way back to Ubley ) back up to the Miners Arms, continuing east to reach the A39 for a short distance before heading to Priddy. With Cheddar Gorge being closed the return was via the undulating route to Charterhouse, Tynings & Longbottom. Goodbye to Yan , & then Mike as the rest of us ( Anne, John P , Dave, Andrew , Adam & Sally ) continued the descent to Winscombe. The rain just caught up with some of us for the final stretch back home. 35mi , 2,300' from Winscombe with some of us adding a bit more to get home & dry off.

23 September 2022 - Holy Cow
Seven of us gathered at Ubley Village Hall from where Barbara W led us past Chew Valley Lake via the new beautifully tarmaced recreational path, continuing up to Ston Easton then down to Chilcompton where we sat in sunshine at the Holy Cow café. Holy Cow! what a good welcome we had with exceptionally good cakes in huge slices, enough to fortify us for the return to Ubley on a variety of different lanes. Barbara had a close encounter with a falling conker which is another reason to wear a helmet whilst cycling.
16th September 2022 - Coxley
8 of us turned out to ride to Brownes Garden Centre, Coxley. We had a very pleasant time sitting in the sun eating cake. Our ride back involved a 4 mile diversion because the road from Shapwick to Avalon marshes was closed to all traffic - even bikes aaaagh! The workman was very vague about where it started and ended but said it went on for a mile. We saw or heard nothing to indicate the road was being torn up but had to concede defeat! 38 miles back to Wedmore and probably 60 for Mike to Churchill.
18th September 2022
4 of us started the ride led by Allan which was quickly reduced to 3 near Wedmore when Barbara had a puncture in her back tyre. B decided that the tyre was too difficult to deal with so Dave filled it with some foam Barbara had which worked really well and got her back to Cheddar. We continued as we started in an anti-clockwise direction which made a nice change, missing out what would have been a descent down Snake Lane but instead would have became a climb! We did the rest though. Great ride thanks Allan!

Friday 12th August. Five hot and hearty souls rode to Bullock Farm Café. Barbara B and John G formulated an excellent* reduced route as the group decided the whole of route 4M was a bit lengthy for a 30ºC day. Andrew joined us all the way from Bridgewater - no, he didn't ride from there! We went via Congresbury and Claverham and then headed straight to Kingston Seymour and to the café. Enjoyable bacon baps! Much discussion about the 126 bus too. We tried what we thought might be a new connection to the Strawberry Line from a track just by the bridge where Lampley Road joins Kenn Road (B3133), but it petered out. So, onto the B3133 and, shortly after the Bridge Inn, right down the new Strawberry Line extension path which is considerably more pleasant. It pops out by one of the factories in Arnold's Way. Then right and left and wiggle through the Electric John Housing Locale to Yatton Station and the Strawberry Line. All in all, quite an improvement and a route we imagine will go through Lampley Road eventually. *But, not excellent for Dave the Shed who thought we were a pile of wimps and continued in a Westerly direction for another 50 miles or so. The wimps continued on the Strawberry Line and Patrick returned straight home for a cold drink. 23½ miles, Sandford return. Good day, good café, good company. Author Patrick.
Friday 5th August. Café ride to Parkside Café. Eight of us out in warm sunshine on a rural-urban-rural cycle taking in cyclepaths (psychopaths?) through bits of W-s-M and alongside the River Banwell for a change. We channeled our inner aeroplane as we rode along Glider Avenue and the Runway, waited ages for the train at the level crossing in St George's and encountered angry idiots driving on three separate occasions but had the usual friendly reception and vast array of home made cakes at Parkside café which made the urban excursion worthwhile. Amazingly, each one of us today had a different name, including newbies Chris and Gerry, who appeared to enjoy themselves, so we hope they will join us again. Author / Leader Teresa.
And ... from Chris & Gerry. Just a quick note after today’s ride to say thank you Teresa for a super ride and thanks to everyone else for being such good company. We both thoroughly enjoyed it (especially the café stop). Hoping to ride on the 12th. Best wishes Chris and Gerry.

Friday 29th July. Café ride to Sprouts Café in Grove Park. Ride 10M. Thirteen joined this ride on a lovely day to the newly reopened café in Grove Park. Some upset at the lack of meat! Personally, I thought it super with a delicious Ciabatta. The WSM Tourist Office was out in (relative) force with a Tic-Tuk. We had various discussions about the Art (Murials) in WSM. Back via Brent Knoll. 2 x punctures - Congratulations to Dave the Shed and Jackie. Just under 36½ miles Sandford Station return. Excellent Leader Allan R. Author Patrick. See Recent History for Info on Culture Weston.
Friday 15th July. Was to have been Ride 4M anticlockwise, but it wasn't! Seven started from the Rec and, because the lift of See Monster onto its legs was scheduled, we decided to go and have a look. We went via Loxton, Bleadon and and Cycle Route 33 to Uphill and along the prom in WSM. Lots of people watching and lots of people in hard-hats actively playing about with the crane but no lift as such. We went to The Cove café for coffees & snacks, popped back to check nothing was occurring and, as it wasn't, so continued via Kewstoke, Wick St Lawrence, Hewish and Puxton to Sandford and, for some, back to the Rec. About 25.5 miles (not including pootling around in WSM). Lovely weather, not too hot and one we will remember - the day we went to see See Monster. Leader Patrick (okay, really, Mike). Patrick's pics of See Monster here.
Sunday 10th July. Ride to Priddy Folk Festival. Four of us turned out for a ride up the gorge accompanied by a plethora of petrol guzzling macho motorbike prats going far too fast for a Sunday day out in the sunshine. The noise and the fumes!! There was an accident near the top of the gorge which is not surprising. (About time the gorge was closed on Sundays, April through October 9am to 6pm to anything but electric and human powered transport! Patrick).
On to Priddy where it was thankfully motorbike free and folksy. Clog dancing delight! At least the journey back via Charterhouse was much quieter and we could appreciate the lovely views over to Wales from the top at Tynings farm. Leader & Author Yan.
Friday 8th July. Café ride. 9 riders turned up for well trodden ride to Bleadon café. Lovely day weatherwise. Good food at café, Mike's sausage and bacon panini looked great. Not a long ride, but worth it! Leader & Author Yan.
Friday 1st July. Mystery Café ride. Six assembled at The Rec and five entered suggestions into the draw. Adam just went along with Teresa's suggestion (because past experience has told him it is unwise not to). Yan was unimpressed! Anyway, Allan made the draw and it was Mike's suggestion of The Greedy Goose. Sandford Dave was immediately horrified on the hill / distance front (though, to be fair the hills were minor but the distance is a matter for personal judgement). Yan read out the other suggestions - all different - and they have been retained for another day? We rolled through Wrington (past the shut Mother Hen Café) along the railway path to the destination. Dave's personal judgment on distance at this point was 'too distant'. Mike negotiated a bacon bap with egg (even though it was past the 11:30am breakfast watershed) and, Patrick, on the back of that ordered bacon bap sans oeuf. Patrick's seemed particularly vast but he woofed it down as Adam was looking ready for the off. At Yatton Patrick went his own way to see Vera in Congresbury (post minor heart-attack - tired but otherwise fine and affronted to suffer such an indignity at 91). Adam & Teresa were due to depart for Heathrow at 2am on Saturday for the Austria trip! We wished them well. Thanks to all. Good ride, quite windy, pleasant temperature, no rain, 36.5 miles Sandford to Sandford. Leader Mike. Author Patrick.

Sunday 26th June. Ride from Winscombe Rec to an unknown destination. Leader Dunno. See Recent History.
Friday 24th June. Ride 2S from Wedmore to Double Gates. Leader Yan. Six riders on a day which threatened rain but, apart from three drops in Wedmore itself, none came. In fact generally pleasant weather! We had a confrontation with a large blue snake completely blocking the road - a road which did have a Road Closed sign. The usual trick of 'all roads being passable to cycling groups containing an ex-doctor or ex-teacher' failed to do the trick and we had to loop back and round. Luckily, although the blue snake was due to cross the next road (also billed as Road Closed), it had not yet arrived and we continued on to Double Gates. It wasn't exactly balmy, so we sat inside and Anne organised the updating of the CVLC WhatsApp group membership with Allan C, Bill and Katherine. Mike and Patrick were given remembering tasks to do once at Sandford and, over a cup of tea, they were initiated. c45 miles return to Sandford and nearly 50 for Mike. Thanks to Yan for another enjoyable ride. Author Patrick.
Weather turned out better than expected for the 6 riders who turned out today, A very warm welcome and great food at Double Gates including a full English for Bill (beat that Steve!) We had a short detour because some men were laying a blue water pipe over the fields between Glasto and Godney, Out of action for a few more weeks if you are over that way (the old Health and safety chestnut meant we were unable to pass and had to take the next turning). Author Yan

Thursday 23rd June. Away Day saw 8 meet in Bradford on Avon after various difficulties driving due to heavy traffic. The start of the ride was along the towpath where it soon became apparent that the vegetation ( i.e. nettles) had grown considerably since the recci . A wide variety of boats were moored along the stretch before turning inland to Holt & then via country lanes to Chalfield Manor NT property ( an idea for another day ) . The sun was shining & plenty of countryside to see as we rode along the Wiltshire Cycle Way through the attractive villages of Shaw, Whitley & Gastard before reaching Lacock the National Trust village with pre tried cakes from the village store .
Leaving Lacock we continued on country lanes with good views culminating in a very steep descent into Bradford on Avon where sandwiches were eaten under the trees whilst sheltering from the one shower of the day . What comes down has to go up & a couple of the group joined Anne for the 'opportunity' to walk up Jones Hill at the start of an undulating section which eventually led down to Freshford & ice creams at Brass Knocker Basin by the Dundas aqueduct. Having cycled over the aqueduct we then had a good stretch along a wide towpath with plenty of barges both moored & on the water with 2 in a lock at the end . Everyone seemed to enjoy the opportunity to explore a different area with plenty of points of interest. Leader Anne (with thanks to John P).

Friday 17th June. Sunshine at the seaside: Sand Point café for weak coffee & no cake, Weston, Uphill, Brean etc. Back via East Brent. About 30 miles. Leader Barbara B. See Recent History.
Friday 10th June. 'Monthly Easy Ride''. Six riders, (would have been seven had Yan not had a puncture en route to the start) set off, avoiding the Strawberry Line as it was full of millions of school-children on organised walks from Churchill school. Jackie on her new bike, too! We halted at Yatton for Café Stop One. New Dave then returned home whilst the rest of us headed off (using a special Teresa path at one point) to Clevedon where a delivery of an 87th birthday card was made. Then back via Kingston Seymour to Café Stop Two - Patrick's Garden for tea / coffee and a bit of bike fettling for Trevor. 25 miles return to Sandford, 34 return to Weare. Excellent weather, plenty of leisure. Leaders Various. See Recent History for photos.
Sunday 29th May - 16L Cheddar to Wells. 8 riders started the ride and we all got to Wells except Steve who was lulled into Wookey Hub with a sausage roll and a bacon sandwich. The rest of us got a bit cold in cloudy Wells. No rain in sight as the sun came out there and back defying the forecast of rain. Maybe donning the rain jackets on the return journey had something to do with it. Leader Yan.
Friday 27th May - Ride 9M to Meadgate Farm shop café near Timsbury. Start is at Lynda's Loaf for a 30 mile very scenic circuit with a few ups and downs. Leader Teresa. .See Recent History.

Friday 13th May. Easy Ride. Just four riders for a proper Easy Ride. 18 miles Sandford to Sandford. Winscombe, Axbridge, Cheddar, Clewer, Stoughton Cross, Ashton Windmill, Great (and cheap) café in Weare with special homemade Irish thingies which are like some special Scottish homemade thingies but with more alcohol. Lovely day though quite windy. Leader (theoretically) Patrick but (in practice) Trevor & Jackie. See Recent History for pics.
Friday 29th April. Ride from Wedmore to Double Gates Tea Rooms and back. Beautiful day and enjoyable ride on The Levels with seven riders. 43.5 miles Sandford to Sandford. Leader Yan.
Friday 22nd April. Ride from Winscombe / Yatton Station / Kingston Seymour / Radio aerials. Then on to Hand Stadium Road / turn left for Dots for a Café stop. Back to Hand Stadium Road but left on to Nailsea Causeway / turn to Chelvey Church / Claverham / Wrington / Churchill / Winscombe. Leader Mike.(on his Birthday). Pretty chilly with a fresh wind. 33.5 miles Sandford Station return. Warmer on return! New Andrew joined us. Welcome! 9 or 10 riders out.

Sunday 17th April. Ride 6M. Starting at Wedmore 10.30. 7 of us out today. This route seems so much easier clockwise, coming down through Launcherley. Real 'leisure cycling'. Glorious weather and a leisurely picnic by Bishop's Palace moat. Leader Barbara B.
Friday 15th April. Ride 16M. Great time had by all, was it 11 or12? I lost count. Held up near Sweets by the annual tractor rally (never seen it before). There must have been 100+ tractors going along the levels. Some people having rides and others just showing off their tractors. As Barbara said it looked like an invasion - a great line trundling along the narrow road as far as the eye could see. Was interesting but after the first 10 we got a bit fed up!! Met Mike at Sweets and lost Steve.(well waved at him at The Bakery in Mark) Hope Mike is Covid free for his ride on Friday. Thanks to all who came - a brilliant sunny day. Leader Yan. I agree - a brilliant ride in perfect cycling weather! Patrick.
Sunday 10th April. On a warm sunny day 14 of us met a KOW Cheddar. As the number was quite large some set off without the leader in the usual clockwise direction. However the leader had planned an anti-clockwise direction so we ended up as two separate groups. A little bit delayed due to a chain jamming, both groups managed to meet up at the café in Burnham, and an enjoyable day was enjoyed by all. Leader Allan.
Friday 8th April. Alternative Ride / Monthly Easy Ride. Eleven and, for a while, twelve were on the Easy Ride(!) which was almost 35 miles Sandford door to door but had no hills*. Trevor headed back from Yatton and went to visit Sandy & John (covering 27 miles). The rest of us continued to Gatcombe. Café good and efficient - has it changed hands? Weather kind and *Teresa and Adam returned by a Hilly Route. Excellent ride all around and joined by Bill (who I called Steve for unknown reasons - sorry - I don't do names!). Mike, Bill, John P (and others?) stopped for tea with Anne and Dave & Dave joined me for tea in my garden. As we were engaged in that pursuit, Adam rode by on the Strawberry Line (presumably, avoiding some hill!). Thanks to Mike for leading. Author Patrick. (PS. DJ Dave's longest ride since he was a teenager!).
Sunday 3rd April. Rocky Mountain. Leader Teresa.
Friday 1st April. Despite dire weather the day before, a cold and unpromising forecast and it being April Fools' Day, 11 of us braved it and went on ride 10M to Weston and back via Uphill, Berrow and Brent. The many layers, (but Mike still in shorts), weren't needed and we became positively hot. Sat in the sun at Cove Café, Madiera Cove where we boosted custom, and noise levels. Café revamped and has good v large cakes. Leader / Author Barbara. See Recent History.

Sunday 27th March. Winscombe Loop. About 25-30 miles from Winscombe - Barton Rd - Loxton - Rooks Bridge - Vole Rd - Mark (cake shop or village shop stop) - diversion to Sweets - Wedmore - Lower Weare - Winscombe. Leader John G.
Sunday 27th March. Medium Ride. Return to Bere Cider Farm. Leader Steve.
Friday 25th March. Portishead. Leader Anne
Sunday 20th March - Shorter option. Four of us had a luvverly leisure ride to The Hub going past the very deep ford. It was great as unusually we had the wind behind us over the levels via the Cats and Dogs Home. Not sure of mileage but rest assured we didn't break any records. Leader / Author Yan.
Sunday 20th March - Longer option. A glorious sunny spring Sunday for Allan's ride from Avalon over the Poldens. Unfortunately bike issues forced Allan to be with us for only a short while. This left 3 (Teresa, John P & Anne) to continue over The Poldens towards High Ham. A change to the planned route saw the 3 on a new steadily ascending road leading to the Cider Farm at Aller. Leaving temptation to next Sundays ride the café stop this week was The Bridge at Langport. No shortage of cyclists, paddle boarders & walkers enjoying a good range of refreshments. It was then on to Barrow Mump, along the "hair of the dog " strava segment, to Chedzoy & a group decision to go along the cycle path so Anne could get a chance to sit on a "throne" at Bawdrip. Back over the Poldens & John had a puncture but as Teresa commented it was in the sunshine -"just a shame there wasn't a bench". Anne learnt the finer art of campanology whilst the tyre was sorted. Plenty of speedy cyclists had passed us by but we were enjoying the leisurely ride so much that we all went on to Mark before making our way back to Cross / Avalon. Daffodils, plenty of chatter cycling on the quiet roads and no shortage of spring sunshine was we all agreed a perfect way to spend a Sunday. Leader Allan. Author Anne.
Friday 18th March. Easy Ride. Meeting at Winscombe, along with the long ride group, Patrick, our leader, briefed us that Mike had already planned an extension and we would not be stopping at Axbridge for coffee as it would be too early. The plan was to reach The Old Bakery at Mark and I was already looking forward to the Bakery’s sausage roll. Strawberry line to Axbridge only to see our usual coffee stop was closed. Onwards to Cheddar and upwards to NYE Road. Draycott next and then around Nyeland Hill towards Wedmore. A small delay whilst Mike mended his puncture and then onwards through Wedmore to the wonderfully named Hozzards Lane to enter Mark from the levels. Certain faces were a real picture when riders discovered the Bakery was closed this week. The group was saved by discovering the Post Office had an excellent Havana coffee machine and great range of cakes and savouries. We sat outside on picnic benches in wonderful sunshine. After a well-earned rest the group split with 4 riders heading for Rooksbridge and on to Barton Road to return to Winscombe. The other 4 riders headed in the other direction across the levels to return to Weare and Cheddar. The group did decide that it was a great “Short” (over 25 miles) and most unusually for the Club rides we did not manage to lose anyone. Thanks to Patrick and Mike for planning and leading today’s ride. Author: Trevor. Leaders: Mike & Trevor (& Patrick for about 1 metre). 12 miles back to Sandford from Mark. Then DJ & Mike joined me in my garden for tea - almost too hot! What a brilliant leisure ride. Patrick.
Friday 4th March. "A Winscombe 20/40 ride" A ride of two halves. Do one or do both. First half is flatter and the second half hillier - it goes up Mendip the easier way (is there an easy way?) and then back down the Gorge. Everything starts and finishes at Winscombe. 20 miles or 40 miles! Teresa. See Recent History.

Sunday 27th February. Ride to Brean for coffee at National Trust. On a very bright sunny Sunday morning we met at Mark Church car park for a cycle to the coast. Ann, Dave, Steve, David and I set off on a slightly different route through Chapel Allerton to Weare. Then onto Cross where we met Yan. The route was very scenic following the edge of Mendips to Loxton and then onto Uphill. The route then took us through the nature reserve to Brean Down. It was good to see holiday caravans intact despite recent storms. Coffee at the National Trust café. We were kept entertained by the RNLI rescue hovercrafts, chariot racing, and happy holiday makers making most of the weather. We then had a flattish cycle back to Mark via Berrow and Brent Knoll. Good day out. Sally.
Friday 25th February. Ride 2M from Wedmore with coffee at Butleigh, A group of eight assembled at 10:30 on a mostly sunny but blustery day with a cold wind. Except on the odd occasion when the wind was behind, it seemed to be a head-wind! Good route (with one short bit of main-road). Apart from a small mudguard incident for Mike and a disc-brake rubbing noise for Sally, we arrived unscathed at the heaving Drawing Room Coffee Shop (in Butleigh) and sat outside in some sun though, in the end, we all got cold. Food and drinks excellent and Patrick's first visit to this nice venue. Then back to Wedmore, a journey which seemed to have unrelenting head-winds the whole way. Adam, Teresa, Yan, Mike and Patrick continued to Cheddar while Sally set off on her own and Barbara W and Allan (our illustrious leader) returned to their cars. We left Yan at her house and Mike & Patrick left Adam & Teresa in Axbridge. Mike was particularly knackered though Patrick wasn't far behind in those stakes. Mike went through Axbridge and Patrick bypassed it. These two rendezvous'd at the lovely view point at the start of the Strawberry Line and sat for a while before returning home in the increasingly freezing wind. Ride 2M was 32.7 miles and Sandford to Sandford was 51.3 miles. Too far in the weather conditions! Nevertheless Patrick sort-of enjoyed it despite being very knackered, but what a blissful shower! Even further for Mike ... Patrick

Friday 11th February. New Route: Croscombe via Downside. Undulating to Wells, rising up from South and East Horringtons and on to Rocky Mountain café for coffee etc. From there continuing on along the old Roman road before doubling back to Downside and then down all the way to Croscombe. From there gentle undulations to North Wootton and gently back to Cheddar. 38 miles, 2500 feet ascent. Leader Teresa. See Recent History.
Friday 11th February. 'Monthly Easy Ride''. 14 and a bit (Sandford to Sandford) really tough miles to the Strawberry Line Café and back. Leader Patrick. See Recent History.
Note: Next month's Easy Ride will be on the 18th of March.
Friday 4th February. It's Ride 7S but stopping at Sweets instead of the café at Chilton Polden. Leader: Yan. See Recent History.

Sunday 30th January. Started with a cold, frosty, foggy morning de-icing the car, but the day just got better & better. Having passed the intrepid Steve (leader) & Teressa on their way to Avalon the group of 5 was completed with John P and, great to see, John Derrick. Straight up through Shapwick over the Poldens & carefully down Pedwell. By now the sun was out & my mind focused on the hill to High Ham. After a welcome rest in the sun at the top, Steve took us down a very steep hill to arrive at Bere Aller cider farm/café. What a great find - 5* from us all. Cakes, lasagna & bacon baps devoured, it was on to Langport from where John P led us around his home patch via Chedzoy, King's Sedgmoor Drain track & via Bawdrip up back onto the Polden ridge. Steve & Teressa set off back home whilst the 2 Johns & myself carried on back to Avalon for a cuppa & chat. 34 miles & agreed by all as the best ride for quite a while. Anne.
Friday 28th January. Stretcholt and the Poldens No report.
Sunday 23rd January. Sea-side trip. Puxton, Banwell, St George, Wick St Lawrence, Sand Bay, Weston, Hutton. Coffee & Cake at Sand Bay or Kewstoke. Leader Anne. No report.
Friday 21st January. Wells. Wedmore to Wells back via Launcherley - Route 6M. Leader Allan. See Recent History.
Sunday 16th January. Bleadon Café. Numbers went up this time starting at 6 at the KOW; we were then joined by 3 at Cross and became 10 for a bit when Steve joined us at the café in Bleadon and a bit further. 26 to 34 miles round trip depending on starting point. Yan.
Friday 14th January. Alternative Ride. A decidedly chilly* but gloriously sunny day. *Mike in shorts as expected! Six riders set off from Winscombe Rec and were joined by two more at Sandford for an amble to Mother Hen at Wrington. Altogether three riders from St Monica - well done! And now, the only complaint of the day - the houses opposite Mother Hen across Broad Street are too tall and prevented the sun reaching and warming us while we sat outside. Then we split into various groups and sub-groups. DJ, Meryl and Yan returned in the direction in which they had arrived, Adam and Teresa set off to climb Burrington Combe and Dave, Mike and Patrick headed north. Patrick returned along the Strawberry Line from Yatton. while the other two continued further. An altogether super day for a ride in the sun. Patrick. (See Recent History for one picture).
Sunday 9th January. Wookey Hub. 5-4-3-2-1 You may remember this rather catchy song from Manfred Mann? It was a bit like this on today's ride........ we started out as the Famous Five shortly to become the Fab Four as one departed at Draycott. We then became the Terrific Trio just past Wedmore. Luckily we stayed that way to the Hub and back to Wedmore where we became the Dynamic Duo all the way back to Cheddar. Circa 34 miles. No names are mentioned as I accept no liability in writing this rubbish. Leader Yan. Yan.

Friday 7th January. On your Marks. Figure of 8 ride starting from Mark Church. With a 'not very good' weather forecast I was very pleased to be joined by 6 other riders at Mark for the start of the ride (therefore making us The Magnificent Seven). We set off in dry weather around the bottom loop of our 'Figure of Eight' ride, and got as far as Woolavington before the rain started in earnest. Consequently the coffee stop at Chilton Polden was very welcome. Over coffee it was decided to miss out the top loop due to the rain, so we all headed back to Mark and home. Allan.
Sunday 2nd January 2022. Four riders out today for ride to Glasto. Great to see John P who had cycled over from Cross to wish us HNY. He returned to Cross so we started off in the dry but as approaching G the heavens opened! We managed to get a seat outside under the only bit of awning at the café but it had stopped raining then so was only mildly damp. On the way back it rained intermittently - just about bearable. 25 miles all told to Wedmore for Allan, 31 for John and Yan to Cheddar and probably another 6 miles for Dave. Thanks John G (leader) for the ride and have a lovely time walking in the Lake District next week. Yan.
